About Us

The Potomac Speedskating Club is a 501(c)3 non-profit charitable sports organization founded in 2008. It is supported and staffed by an all-volunteer group of parents and skaters.

We are home to many talented skaters, including Thomas Hong, a member of the U.S. 2018 Olympic team; Brandon Kim, 2016, 2017 and 2018 Junior National Champion and U.S. Speedskating 2016 Junior Development Skater of the Year; Hailey Choi, U.S. Speedskating 2018 Junior Development Skater of the Year; and Shawn Kim, U.S. Speedskating 2018 Junior Development Skater of the Year.

Head Coach Simon Cho, an Olympic bronze medalist, leads the team with help from Development Coach James Koo.

The mission of the Potomac Speedskating Club is to foster the growth of short-track speedskating in the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area (D.C., Maryland, and Virginia) and the neighboring states of Pennsylvania and Delaware through:

  • Providing coaching and instruction to Club members of all ages and abilities for the purpose of recreational and competitive short-track speedskating
  • Encouraging participation of skaters in local, regional and national events
  • Organizing meets to support the United States Speedskating Association to further the development of short-track speedskating

Short-track speedskating can be learned at any age. We require that skaters be at least 5 years old, but beyond that, we welcome anyone who wants to skate fast and have fun. We encourage adult skaters as well as special needs skaters to participate fully in our club too. Hockey skaters, inline skaters and figure skaters can become proficient short-track skaters in less time than those who have no prior skating experience, but the majority of our skaters start as novice skaters.
