 Three-peat!!! (March 2019)

The Potomac Speedskating Club won the title of National Club Champion for the THIRD year in a row (and fourth time in club history) at the US Speedskating National Age Group Short Track Championship in Verona, Wi. March 22-24, 2019! Twenty skaters competed for Team Potomac.

Hailey Choi showed great maturity competing against the fastest skaters in the country, placing fifth in the America Cup to finish the circuit in second place overall in the 1500m and third place overall in the 1000m. We enjoyed catching up with Potomac alum Andrew Heo, who also raced well to place 6th in the U.S. at the AmCup race.

Ava Fradlin-Ryan kicked off the season with a broken leg but worked her way back to earn the title of national champion in the Junior B women’s division. In Junior C men, Seung-Min Kwon and Shawn Kim earned the top two spots on the podium. Sydney Wong skated away with the bronze medal among Junior D women. Jing-Kye “Mathew” Yen fought the good fight to earn third in the Junior D men’s group, with Sean Shuai, Peter Groseclose (in his nationals debut) and Lucas Koo battling it out to earn fifth, sixth and eighth place, respectively. In the Junior E women’s group, Kyungeun “Cindy” Jang won three of four distances to earn the gold medal while Audrey Lengkong won third place. Benjamin Sullivan edged out the competition in every distance to win the overall title for Junior E men.

In the master’s division, Laura Alexander took the top prize and Yu Shuai, skating in his first nationals, the bronze, in their respective divisions. Tim (who puts the Bake in Shake and Bake) Groseclose skated valiantly in the master’s division, Andrew Lengkong made personal best lap times skating in Junior C men, Ethan Lin executed some impressive passes in his first appearance at nationals, in the Junior E division, Samir Ouchikh finished in the top 10 in Junior E, the largest age group, and Noah Troppe had breakout performances and times in Junior B men.

A standing ovation to Potomac head coach Simon Cho, who is already thinking about next season, kudos to Coach James Koo for the endless hours he has put in to train Potomac’s newest skaters and thank you to all the parents who put so much time and effort into supporting the skaters and making the club a family.
